Chicago 2024…The Spector of 1968…Swifties for Trump
The pettiness of election 2024 spewed into Chicago and the Democratic National Convention like a sewage leak. MAGA heads are quick to point out that downtown Chicago looks like a war zone. They are waiting with bated breathes for a scene like the 1968 convention to play out. Nothing would make them happier. But there aren’t a lot of similarities this time around. We’re not in an unnecessary war that is sending young folks to die. We don’t have a hardline, corrupt, republican administration like Nixon’s. And despite what the right, Fox News and other right-leaning blowhards say, Chicago is pro-business and not going to let protestors run amok in the city and cost it millions of dollars.
On Friday, I took a walk through the loop. A few stores boarded up their windows. There was a doubling of police at the train stations. Otherwise, it was business as usual.
Around the United Center, they cordoned off a huge perimeter of outlying streets. Unless you’re a big name, there’s no real chance of getting close to either convention in a car. There are reportedly 200 scheduled protests and demonstrations all over the city in the next few days and they’re not taking any chances of some whack job rolling in with something in their car.
